“Just give it to God”        “Cast your care”    God’s grace is enough”    “Let go and Let God”

I don’t know about you….but I get real tired, real quick with these Christian-ese phrases that are supposed to be answers to my dire questions and painful circumstances.

Because I believe God. I believe His word.  I believe that I have the same power in me that raised Christ from the dead, (Romans 8:11) that He will give me beauty for ashes (Isaiah 61:3) and that He will fight for me I need only be still (Exodus 14:14).  But when people start speaking Christian-ese, I find myself baffled with HOW?????

What exactly am I giving to God? How am I giving it to HIM? Where do I cast my care? And how do I operate in the spirit as opposed to the flesh?

Anybody? ….Bueller….

I’m gonna take a guess and say if you’re still reading, you may have some similar frustrations. In fact, it has become evident to me that most Christians operate in the ‘I’ll just give it to God’ vernacular but they have absolutely no clue what that means or how to do it. They sprinkle a little “Jesus” on their problem and grin and bear it.  And friends, if we continue to live that way, we are not fully stepping into the heritage we have as daughters and sons of the Most High King!

It took me losing everything to discover this.  I’d love to share what the Lord has taught me.

Three years ago I went through a very painful and traumatic divorce. I wasn’t expecting it, I didn’t have any say in it, and quite frankly I didn’t know you could be in that much pain and survive. I couldn’t take one more person sprinkling a “sweet little Jesus phrase” on me. I knew God was the only one who could fix it.  But I needed real life Grace. I needed real power from the Holy Spirit.  I needed my own Red Sea to part.

About that time, the Lord brought a mentor in my life. And I will never forget the first time she spoke this phrase,

“Honey, you can’t fix anything.  You gotta put the word on it.”

Huh?

Brace yourself….this has the power to change everything!

The Bible tells us we need to put on the armor of God because “we don’t wrestle with the flesh, but against the rulers, the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6: 11-12)

Cool.  Cool.  Wait, what? We are at war, my friend!  And we are going to need the FULL armor to succeed against it.  If you are a believer, you already have victory over death through Christ. But we are instructed to suit up!

Now as you’re getting dressed for battle…slipping into those comfy shoes of peace, picking up that rather weighty shield of faith… I don’t know if you’ve noticed but you’ve got one, count it, ONE weapon of offense.

“And the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, pray at all times in the spirit.”

(Ephesians: 6:17-18)

Let that land friends. I could go on and on about our defensive weapons of faith and standing on truth, but when it comes to what we do, Paul tells us!  Pull out your sword and swing with accuracy!

Oh and P.S.—if God says that we are to use the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word, He is guaranteeing that for every stronghold, or fear, or painful experience we encounter, there is scripture in the Word of God that speaks life and freedom to it!  My heart flutters thinking about how God has met me time and time again when I haven’t believed this.

I am challenging you to try to find a problem in your life that the word of God doesn’t speak to!

Ok, stay with me here because I’m about to take us out of the conceptual and get real practical.  Now that we have accepted the challenge…We have to get scripture that apply to our circumstances and we have to start battling WITH the word.

For example, let’s say that you are struggling with bitterness against someone who has wronged you.  We can tell ourselves to forgive and try to force ourselves to “feel” differently until the Cubs win the world series (oh wait…that finally happened) but that is never going to sink into our marrow and change us, the way the Word of God will!  (Hebrews 4:12)  So, let’s head to the concordance (that’s the section in the very back of your Bible) and start looking up scripture that you can use to combat it.

So maybe we start with words like “mind” “peace” “forgiveness” “freedom” “fight” “healing” etc.  Below each of these words in your concordance is scripture that pertains to it.  For example, you may use Exodus 14:14 “You need only stand still and the Lord will fight for you” for the word “fight.” Or maybe Isaiah 26:3 “You keep him in Perfect peace whose mind is fixed on you, because he trusts in you.” for peace of mind.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you with scriptures that speak to your situation. Remember He knows your heart better than you do—He knit you in the womb, so He might even expose a different angle you weren’t even thinking about!

Can you even?  The Holy Spirit is LEGIT!

My mentor taught me to use 5-8 scriptures, that way I’m attacking my circumstance from all angles. But know this—it only takes ONE. The word of God is more powerful than a double-edged sword; so don’t get legalistic about it.

Once you have your scriptures, write them down on a note cards. Then on the other side of the note card, write it out actively with your name or in the first person inserted as though the Lord has already done it for you.  We are speaking into existence what is not yet done and asking in expectation according to James 1: 6-8.

Start speaking your scripture daily, hourly, every moment you feel like you can’t, you remind God of His promises to you as a daughter or son in Him and thank Him that He is already working it together for YOUR GOOD.  Remember, he doesn’t play favorites! (Romans 2:11) Yea…I don’t get it either, but I am so grateful He doesn’t!

Speak into existence healing and freedom according to God’s Word.  In your quiet time. When you feel attacked. In the car while driving. The Bible says that the power of life and death are in the tongue- Start speaking LIFE into your own life and watch how the Holy Spirit moves and transforms!

Not only are you using the sword of the spirit to start manifesting healing and freedom but the words are a self-discipline that say, “I believe you God, even though right now it doesn’t look like I have anything to believe.” (Galatians 5:23, Hebrews 1:11)

And you know that part when you are still waiting? When you are still in the desert and it looks like everything is dead and dry? When you use your sword, and five minutes later you need to use it again? Think of it as training. You’re becoming a gladiator. And every time you use the sword, Change is happening! Deliverance is happening! Healing is happening!

God’s word always accomplishes what it goes out to do and NEVER returns void!  (Isaiah 55:11)

“Honey, you cannot change anything. You gotta put the word on it.”

Then watch the mountains move.
